James thinks he was seven or eight when he had his first drink.
By the time he was 13, he was an alcoholic.
He had lost interest in school and joined a gang not because he wanted to cause trouble, but because the gang gave him something he was missing at home: a sense of belonging.
He wasn’t even a latchkey kid; he was the epitome of a throwaway kid.
No one cared where he was or what he was doing, let alone held him accountable or gave him guidance.
For years, he drifted.
Shoplifting, vandalism, and the kind of trouble that should have landed him in real trouble—but somehow, he escaped the worst of the consequences.
Then, everything changed.
James broke his leg and found himself stuck with nothing to do.
Scrolling through YouTube, he stumbled across a video I had made years ago.
He almost skipped it just a few seconds in but then he heard the words:
"You are not responsible for their choices but you are responsible for how you allow their choices to impact your life."
For some reason, that stopped him cold.
He watched the three-minute video several times.
The idea that he wasn’t responsible for what others had done to him but that he did have the power to decide how those choices would shape his life was a shift he never saw coming.
I don’t know what the future holds for James.
He has a long road ahead with some hard choices to make.
But I am grateful to know that he now understands the power of choice.
He knows he has the ability to break the cycle, to step off the path that’s been laid for him, and to create a different future—one of his own choosing.
That’s why I do this work.
Whether it’s through a conversation, a speaking event, a post, or a video, my mission is to help people see that they are not bound by their past.
No matter what’s happened, you have the power to heal from trauma, to rewrite the story, and to create a life filled with peace, success, and joy however you define it.
If you’re ready to reclaim your power and chart a different path forward, I’m here to walk alongside you.
Healing is possible. Freedom is possible. A different future is possible.
And it starts with one brave choice, a choice only you can make.
